Using beard oil daily offers great benefits in terms of overall beard health. It is most commonly applied in the morning, to a damp beard, after showering. But right before that, here’s an important question to ask yourself:

“how am I feeling?” – “what do I want to accomplish today?” 🤔

It is in this precise moment that fragrance can come to play a vital role in your life. We are animals of choice; in that we love to have options. The fact that we need to adapt to different situations leads to the need for alternative solutions, based on preference and outlook. When it comes to how you want your beard to smell, it is no different. You can choose a scent that reflects your mood or choose one to help set your frame of mind looking ahead.

1. WOODSY SCENT OPTION 🪵

Woodsy fragranced beard oils have become a true classic, too often tapping into the lumberjack stereotypes: tough, rugged, wild, and manly. Even though our tree cutting ancestors probably smelled more like sweat than conifers, these scents are enjoyable during wintertime, offering a sense of warmth and comfort. There are however different possibilities within this category.

Do you prefer pine or fir? Maybe a nice mix of both! Cedar, cypress, juniper, sandalwood and many others can be part of a “woodsy scent”. However, if we broaden our horizons, adding woodsy-type smells with other elements such as herbs or citrus, offer an endless potential of inspiration for creating more complex scents that reflect the many possible viewpoints of people!

2. CITRUS OR FRUITY SCENT OPTION 🍊

As long as the world keeps turning, the seasons change. Winter melts into spring, eventually bringing summer and greatness! The citrus/fruity scent profile narrates this so well. Hot sun, flowers and fresh fruit come to mind. Again, the possibilities are endless. Some days may call for a sweeter smell such as orange, bergamot, mandarin or tangerine, others perhaps for a hint of a tarter grapefruit or lemon.

Most importantly, do know that some citrus essential oils can cause skin irritation, so be on the lookout, your beard products should be scented with ingredients from which phototoxic components have been removed, as they are in contact with your face. Nonetheless, the balance is fragile. When it comes to citrus/fruity scents, you don’t want to be smelling like floor cleaner or potpourri... Be vigilant and may your citrus/fruity scent let your true spirit shine!

3. EARTHY SCENT OPTION 🌎

Is the craziness of the world making you feel anxious? Rooted in nature, this scent profile can help you stay grounded.

While it can encompass certain woodsy scents, the earthy category includes a wide variety of smells, sometimes more subtle. Moss, stones, herbs, grass, soil, cool breeze, and fresh water. More particularly, eucalyptus and lavender are often incorporated into earthy fragrances, which have a calming effect to help you stay cool and relaxed. Soothing for the soul!

4. FROM COLOGNES TO UNSCENTED 🧔🏻

Floral notes, musk, leather, jasmine, tobacco, etc. the “cologne” category is the most diversified and complex. Basically, anything goes, as long as it first and foremost pleases your taste!

While essential oils can contain components like antioxidants and vitamins that contribute to the benefits associated with using beard products, fragrance oils are usually used to compose cologne-type fragrances. You then exit the “all natural” category. It is to be noted that these ingredients are artificially created but are not necessarily harmful. What mostly distinguishes them is scent duration. Essential oils’ scent potency tends to last a few hours, fragrance oils can last all day and then some! It’s good to be conscious of that.

These scents really go well with special events, like family gatherings, weddings or just a simple date night with your special someone, so decide accordingly! If you’ve already found a cologne that fits your plans, you might choose to reach for an unscented beard oil, in order to not confuse the olfactory glands in your surroundings with too many smells…

Unscented beard oil is also useful when you need to reset your senses, like when your nose is completely clogged-up because of allergies. Sooner or later, we all reach a point where scent seems futile. Don’t worry, the unscented alternative, if made up of good quality carrier oils, should contain all the elements needed to nourish your skin and keep it hydrated, so you can go about your business with ease!

IN CONCLUSION, THERE'S ALWAYS ANOTHER OPTION TO FIT YOUR NEEDS...

Given the different scent profiles and categories, you can also mix them together if you feel the need to! Don’t hesitate to experiment, fragrance contributes to your style and personality. Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken. But whatever the circumstances, your beard also serves as a vehicle for aromatherapy. No joke, fragrances not only make your beard smell to your liking, but can help you improve your psychological well-being, help you focus on the task at hand, and reduce stress!
